Federal Defender Paralegals create The Focus Forward Project, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides educational programming for pretrial inmates

Federal Defender paralegals Justine Kentla and Alexandra Katz have established The Focus Forward Project, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides educational programming for federal pretrial inmates. The Focus Forward Project, Inc. currently teaches classes for both male and female inmates at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC) and male inmates at the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC). The program is a twelve week course designed to provide both an intellectual and emotional outlet for federal pretrial inmates. In order to graduate from the course, participants must complete weekly reading and journal assignments and participate in life skill training.

On October 4, 2012, the Focus Forward Project celebrated its first graduating class at MCC.  These ten graduates left the program with an updated resume and a host of improved skills in areas such as public speaking, interviewing, and conflict resolution.

The Focus Forward Project also celebrated two winter graduation ceremonies on February 19th at the MCC and on February 21st at the MDC. This is the second class of graduates at the MCC, with 12 participants celebrating the completion of the 12 week course. The Focus Forward Project recognized 7 graduates at the first FFP graduation held at the MDC.

The next set of FFP graduations will take place in July 2013. The Focus Forward Project will begin teaching classes at the Federal Detention Center in Philadelphia this fall.
