Federal Defenders of New York, Inc., Overview: The Federal Defenders of New York is a federally funded, independent organization that provides legal representation to indigent individuals who are charged with federal criminal offenses and are facing a loss of liberty.  Federal Defenders of New York is funded by federal appropriations and all employees receive benefits commensurate to federal benefits.  Salary is based on experience.
Major Duties:  The staff investigators work with our lawyers to investigate allegations of federal criminal conduct, and possible defenses to those allegations, as well as to develop mitigation evidence.  A staff investigator independently plans and conducts complete investigations by locating and interviewing witnesses, researching records, conducting computer searches, analyzing physical and forensic evidence, consulting experts, visiting potential treatment programs, and viewing and photographing locations.  An investigator presents findings in reports and may be called upon to testify in court.   An investigator will perform other related duties as assigned. 
Qualifications Required: Candidates must either possess a Bachelors Degree or have criminal investigative experience equivalent to a college degree. You must be computer literate.  You must be curious, persistent, concerned about the biases of our criminal justice system, and able to empathize strongly with defendants and their families.  You must have a valid NY Drivers’ License.  You must be able to pass a national security clearance so that you can assist on national security cases.
Qualifications Desired: exceptional experience or aptitude in one or more of the following areas: social work; capital mitigation; financial accounting; terrorism cases; forensic evidence; law enforcement practices; computer science.
