Federal Defenders of New York, Inc. (FDNY) has an opening for a full-time Chief Investigator. FDNY is a nonprofit organization providing criminal defense services to indigent persons charged with federal crimes throughout New York City, Long Island, and several counties north of New York City.We have offices in Manhattan, Brooklyn, White Plains, and Central Islip.The successful candidate would likely be based in the Manhattan office but occasional travel to the other offices and elsewhere is required.

Position Description: The Chief Investigator provides advanced investigative services to staff attorneys and serves as a trainer and supervisor to the FDNY’s investigative staff. The Chief Investigator:

  • Performs all of the functions of an Investigator, including locating and interviewing witnesses, evaluating the credibility and value of witnesses, using online research tools for all manner of subjects, locating and obtaining all manner of records, assisting attorneys with analyzing discovery and other documentation in cases, and assisting in determining the overall scope, timing and direction of an investigation;
  • Advises investigative staff concerning the above investigative responsibilities;
  • Manages and oversees day-to-day operations of the investigative projects for the organization, including the organization, staffing, and distribution of work assignments
  • Initiates the formulation and implementation of policies, standards, and procedures as they relate to the investigative staff;
  • Evaluates the overall effectiveness of the investigative program and its components;
  • Implements systems, work methods and procedures to ensure maximum efficiency and economy in the operation and utilization of resource.

Requirements and Qualifications: Degree from accredited institution; at least five years of investigative experience of which two years must be in criminal defense work; excellent writing and oral communication skills; working knowledge of online investigative tools and techniques (to include fee based search platforms such as Accurint, TLO or IRB); document and/or evidence exploitation skills; and a working knowledge of Word, Excel, Power Point and Adobe. The applicant must pass a background investigation; have a valid New York driver license and insured vehicle. Applicant must be able to work flexible hours. The ability to speak, read and write Spanish is preferred, not required. The ability to effectively and clearly communicate orally and in writing, computer proficiency, the ability to manage and supervise staff, communicate and work well with others, demonstrated interest in criminal justice, commitment to obtaining justice of indigent persons and the ability to perform each task associated with this position. All education, experience, training and certifications will be verified.

Salary and Benefits: The starting salary for this position will be fixed commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the applicant within a range of approximately $125,000 to $147,000 per year.The position includes employee benefits including health and life insurance, 403(b). Salary is payable only by Electronic Funds transfer (direct depot).
