Mark Gombiner is a graduate of Oberlin College and the Boston University School of Law. He has worked as a criminal defense lawyer for over 30 years -- in private practice and as a public defender, at the trial level as well as at the appellate level, and in both the state and federal courts. He is an experienced capital defender, having represented clients facing death-penalty prosecution in several jurisdictions.
Mr. Gombiner began his career at Prisoners’ Legal Services in Ithaca. He then worked with William Kunstler on numerous high-profile cases, including People v. Smith, 63 N.Y.2d 41 (1984), in which New York’s highest court vacated a death sentence and declared the state’s mandatory death penalty statute unconstitutional.
Mr. Gombiner has worked in both the Trial Unit and the Appeals Unit of the Federal Defenders. Before re-joining the Federal Defenders in 1997, Mr. Gombiner worked at the Capital Defense Unit of the Legal Aid Society, where he was lead or co-lead counsel in four homicide trials.
